“I just like to smile. Smiling’s my favorite.” – Buddy the Elf
Love that movie. Buddy is the quintessential optimist. Everything is good, and even when things are bad, they’re good really soon after that. This attitude is how I try to work through every day, finding humor in everything. Why? There are many reasons, psychological and physiological, but for me it comes down to this:
I deal with it by laughing at it. I found humor in my hideous recovery from surgery over the Christmas Holidays by naming my catheter “Cathie“, and struggling to laugh every time my kids asked me, “Dad, how’s Cathie today?” When my kids were younger, we learned really quickly that, when they fell or got hurt, their reaction would mirror our reaction. So when the knee got bloody, I’d be all over it with, “SWEET! Chicks dig scars, and that is gonna be a great scar!” My son would eat it up, and forget all about the pain he thought he just had.
A few weeks ago, I was making lunch for me and my kids. We were all in a sullen mood – no idea why – and as I started to cut up our sandwiches, I remembered John Belushi on SNL doing Samurai Delicatessen. I nearly lost it right there on the spot, then I reached for the biggest butcher knife in the drawer, let out a huge scream, and chopped all our sandwiches into bite-sized, but unrecognizable pieces. Kids. Day. Made.
There are good days, and there are bad days, but every single day there is something to smile or laugh at or someone to laugh with. Being an entrepreneur by definition means being intentional, because you have to make your own buck. You can do the same in your approach to every day. Be intentional and find humor in everything, everyday.
