I worked from home today, all day. I set up shop at our dining room table, where I could see out the big front window to watch the storms roll through. Little did I know what we’d be in for! Since today was the only day this week that I didn’t have any meetings booked – on purpose – I had three tools at my disposal that made for a lethal combination.
- Uninterrupted time – how rare is it that anyone, let alone a Dad of two teenagers, gets 7 hours of uninterrupted working time? That’s a huge gift, sometimes so rare that we forget what a gift it is, and blow through it without accomplishing anything. That’s very easy to do, unfortunately.
- A long to-do list – while there’s always something to be done, every now and then you have a really long, but really clear list of things that you have to plow through, each of which has a clear beginning, end, and measure of success. That’s what I had today.
- Looming deadlines – I work best under pressure, so nothing motivates me more than seeing the checkered flag ready to wave at the finish line. While sometimes that feeds my tendency to procrastinate, it also causes me to do my best work. I have several looming deadlines this week, which accounted for most of the items on that to-do list.
Having any one or even two of these tools on any given day may not be productive at all, but having all three of them on such a day was incredibly productive. What;s your best, most productive working day look like?
