“Do hard things.”
I hear that a lot lately. Actually, that message has probably been pointed at me all my life, but I only started hearing it “lately”.
My first instinct upon hearing those 3 words was, “why?”
What’s your first gut reaction?
Because my first question is “why?”, I pursued that question, and I have learned the answer. You probably already know it. You probably knew it at a relatively young age.
I didn’t. I had to learn it.
Here are some “hard things” I’ve done, in no particular order.
✅ Became a Private in Georgia’s state guard at 50.
✅ Started a business with someone I didn’t know doing something I knew nothing about before I knew anything about starting a business.
✅ Shut down a business because it ran out of cash.
✅ Shut down another business because it became economically unsustainable.
✅ Did 21 (and counting) Peachtree Road Races.
✅ Completed GSDF Search + Rescue training course.
✅ Completed “Northern Tier” High Adventure with 12 teenage boys.
✅ Rescued and adopted 13 animals.
✅ Laid to rest 9 adopted rescue animals.
✅ Walked my daughter down the aisle (hardest).
Anyone can do easy things. In fact, for most of my life, I typically chose the shortest distance between 2 points. Why would I choose to do hard things?!?
Well, honestly, sometimes we don’t choose to do them. We face them knowing we have to do them. And I will argue that people won’t do certain things until they have to. That starts with growing up.
▶️ We won’t move out until we have to.
▶️ We won’t pay our own way until we have to.
▶️ We won’t get a real job until we have to.
▶️ We won’t take responsibility until we have to.
▶️ We won’t admit our mistakes until we have to.
▶️ We won’t change life habits until we have to.
▶️ We won’t learn new skills until we have to.
▶️ We won’t do hard things until we have to.
And when we have to, we will. And then we choose to. Why?
Here’s why.
After you do the “hard thing(s)”, you realize that you *can* do them. You have confidence, if not swagger. And the next hard thing you face doesn’t really bother you as much. You’ve done worse. That doesn’t mean we don’t dread it or even fear it. But we know we can do it.
Yeah, it’s a hard thing, but you’ve done harder things, except walking your daughter down the aisle.
But even that, you know you can handle, because you’ve had to do really hard things, and you’ve even *chosen to do really hard things.
Choose to do hard things so that when you must do hard things, you can do them with confidence.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? I said above that mine was “walking my daughter down the aisle”, but that’s only half the story.
The hardest thing was making words come out of my mouth when I turned around to see her in her wedding gown for the “first look.”
I eventually found some words. Not sure if they were good words, since I don’t remember any of them, but I know I spoke.
And if I can speak in that situation, I can speak up anywhere, anytime, from my heart.

What’s the Best Professional Advice You’ve Ever Received?
What is the single best piece of professional career advice you have ever received? Here’s mine. Long long ago in a galaxy far far away (Atlanta, 1994), I was working for a startup now known as A.D.A.M. Health. My boss was Cary Chandler. I was fresh out of MBA school, and knew exactly nothing about…

Wanna Stay Young?
Do Hard Things. When I was young, I wanted a life of comfort. I worked hard so I could relax, do nothing, and be comfortable. Somewhere along the line, that changed to wanting to be UNcomfortable. My great Aunt Romie died at 96. My wife’s great Aunt Miriam died at 103. Both had the same…

WFH for Govt?
WFH applied to govt workers as well because of hashtag#covid. Our Federal (and local & state) governments own massive amounts of CRE. We have recently learned that fewer than 10% (it’s more like 1-2%) of civil servants report to an office. That’s great for them, right? Yeah, good for them if they can get the…

New Grads: WFH or RTO?
My daughter just got her first “big girl job” (her words), and the job is a hybrid position. Her new employer has a plan for how to engage brand new college grads as hybrid or remote employees. * She is spending 2 weeks on site in training, learning the job and the systems, tools, and…

What are you thankful for today?
Me:– My God & creator, who has blessed me with this life and all its ups and downs to get me to exactly where I am today– My Proverbs 31 wife of 31+ years, who works part-time and runs her own custom cookie business (https://lnkd.in/ejWS3SGE)– My special needs son, who is excelling in his job,…

“Be a life long learner”
How many times have you heard that advice? Me, too. But how do you do that? I’m sure I’m not alone when I resist learning something because there’s no purpose in my learning it other than to learn it. I need to have a “why” behind learning something brand new. So, when I think I…

Search + Rescue
This past weekend, I joined 21 of my fellow Georgia State Defense Force volunteer soldiers at Camp Merrill for Search And Rescue Specialist II (SARII) training. We slept in tents, enjoying the 36° nights and 70° sunny days in the north Georgia Mountains. We learned. We embraced the suck. We became friends, and leaned on…

Amazon Mandates RTO
Yesterday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy held a meeting to discuss the pending return to office mandate at Amazon. A summary of his defense of the mandate: “This was not a cost play for us. This is very much about our culture and strengthening our culture.” As expected, the response is coming in hot. Now go…

Customer Discovery vs. Focus Groups
During the first night of the Digital Marketing (#DGM4) class at General Assembly Tuesday night, we went down a number of really great rabbit trails. I encourage such Q&A because it really adds to the class and enables us to apply learning to the students’ actual jobs today. One of those quick sessions resulted from a…
