Digital Marketing 101

A great shout out to the New York headquarters of General Assembly and their content marketing team. They host a great blog with tons of great content and contributors who really know their stuff. As one of the Digital Marketing instructors for GA Atlanta, I was asked to create a series of posts that sum up the 10-week DGM course (which we’ll be offering again in late summer / early fall), which we have called “Digital Marketing 101.”

I really enjoyed creating this series, and it ultimately became the basis for the curriculum for the DGM Bootcamp that we conducted here in Atlanta on May 2. What a great class that was! We’ll be running that same all day bootcamp again on Saturday June 20.

Below is a link to each post and a brief summary, so you can pick and choose which ones you want to dig into.

  • Developing your brand strategy – Everything starts with your brand. Your brand is everything you do. If you are not intentional about defining your brand, the market will define it for you. What are your core values? What is the problem you are solving? Who is your audience? What is your message, voice, and tone? All of these brand items and more must be addressed before the first tweet.
  • Measuring your Digital Marketing efforts – If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Simple as that. So setup to measure everything, then set your 3-5 KPIs, and revisit them on a monthly basis, because they will change. Use Google Analytics, Twitter Analytics, Facebook Insights, and your email provider’s analytics tools, all of which are free and powerful to show you what works, what doesn’t, and who you’re reaching.
  • Owned content marketing – Every piece of content you have or create – blog posts, social posts, email newsletters, email signatures, video, audio, images, photos…everything – is your owned content. And all of it should reflect your brand, because your brand is everything you do. Social media marketing (unpaid) is included here, because a social post is a piece of content that you created, and is a reflection of your brand.
  • Social and search paid advertising – Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, Twitter Ads, Linkedin Ads, and (soon) Instagram promoted posts are all very affordable, very easy to engage in, and very powerful and hyper-targeted. Learn how to use each with precision and within your budget.
  • Understanding the Digital Marketing funnel – Starting with your total reach, we walk you down through your click through rate (CTR), conversion rate, sales cycle, items per purchase, price, average order amount, and revenue. You should setup and measure the entire funnel for every campaign and your aggregate efforts. Measure your ROI based on the results of the marketing funnel.
  • Creating your digital marketing calendar – Nothing hurts like a date, so using something as simple as a Google Spreadsheet, put a name, date, and status on every tactical effort: blog posts, social posts, videos, podcasts, etc. Knowing what you’re going to be publishing in 23 days eliminates the dreaded “what are we gonna post today!” syndrome, and frees you up to make plans to win like Arby’s and Oreo.
  • And a bonus: Digital Marketing Glossary – a simple, straightforward, easy to understand glossary of 40 digital marketing terms you need to know.

So dig in, and learn digital marketing from scratch. It’s not that difficult when you have boundaries and a construct in which to begin. Thanks again to GA for letting me create these posts and the DGM Bootcamp. I hope to see you on June 20!

  • Learning Instagram

When I learned that Instagram had overtaken Twitter with more than 300M users, I though it might be time to try it out. I was in the early majority on Facebook and Twitter, but obviously I’m way behind the laggard curve on Instagram.  Here’s what I’ve learned since joining and participating on Instagram since January…

  • 6 benefits of outsourcing your content marketing

Lots of people who are way smarter than me have written about why you must blog in this age of digital communication and social sharing.  I aggregated hundreds of reasons that you should blog in this post.  So you know you should blog, and you know why you should blog, but you still are not able…

  • Now they blog for their brand!

At last week’s “Blogging for your Brand” class at General Assembly, I challenged the 50+ attendees to write a blog post during the 2-hour class and publish it immediately afterwards, or at least real soon after the class ended.  Guess what? They were up to the challenge!  Check out these newly educated, inspired, and (most importantly)…

  • Don’t go to college

Following on yesterday’s topic, “Your college degree is worthless“, I’m tacking in a different direction today. What I learned in college is serving me very well today. However, when I was in college (get ready), we didn’t have smart phones, email, laptops, or social media. The world has changed – completely – and the mindset…

  • Your college degree is worthless!

That’s what retired talk show host Neal Boortz told me this morning (on the radio). Specifically, he said my degree in English is equivalent to one of those “BlahBlahBlah Studies” degrees. Ouch. But it made me think of two things, the first of which is the subject of this post. Follow up tomorrow. What learning…

  • Top 3 Tech Skills to Get Hired in the Digital Age

Cross posted from the General Assembly blog. When you graduate from college, you have a degree in some specific subject(s). But it is becoming increasingly important that you have practical skills when you enter the workplace, in addition to the specific knowledge you gained during your college career. When you enter the workforce, no matter…

  • Blog or Newsletter or both?

The more I write and speak about writing, the more I get asked this question: should I use a blog or a regular newsletter?  I have my opinion, based on experience, but here are a few arguments for each. Newsletter Push instead of pull – when you publish an email newsletter, that email hits your…

  • My Top 5 Posts of All Time

According to Blogger, these are the posts that have received more visits and page views than any other post I’ve made since early 2012. So You Wanna Bootstrap Your Startup? (Feb 28, 2013) – Heck I still like reading this one. I delivered this as a seminar at ATDC, and the reception was so good…

  • What we learned in Blogging for your Brand

We had a fantastic time last night at General Assembly Atlanta!  Thanks to everyone who attended “Blogging for your Brand”!  Even on a ridiculously cold night, we had a packed house full of people who were eager to start or get into first or second gear in their blogging.  Here’s a simple recap of the…
